Pro Bono Opportunity with Settled

Settled is a charity that was initially set up to help EU citizens living in the UK whose rights were affected by Brexit. Settled continue to provide information, advice and support to EU citizens, including people who are late applying to the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS), or who have had their application refused. They also help when people are struggling to prove their immigration status or access rights and services. Since March 2022, Settled also provide advice on Ukraine visa schemes.

Volunteering opportunity

Settled is seeking a volunteer trainer with drafting experience to run a short session for their advice volunteers on basic legal drafting skills including structure, clarity and professionalism.

The session would ideally include some 'interactive' elements, for example as asking volunteers to analyse good and bad examples of writing, or to identify the necessary elements of an email, or to correct an example piece of writing.

This session will address writing skills only and not the legal content of letters/emails, so no knowledge of immigration law is necessary.

Time commitment

Settled would like to run the session once or twice per year but if the trainer preferred, the session could be recorded and re-played to new volunteers.

Settled are flexible about the date of the session(s) but ideally they would like it to take place during lunchtime or in the evening.  Ideally the session would last for approximately 1 hour (90 minutes maximum).

Person specification

A legal professional with legal drafting skills experience.  No knowledge of immigration law is necessary as the session will only address writing / drafting skills rather than legal content.
