The 'Working with..' series focuses on the knowledge and interpersonal skills needed when working with various vulnerable client groups.

The three sessions in this series focus on the knowledge and interpersonal skills needed for working with various vulnerable client groups. They do not cover related areas of substantive law in any depth. Each video lasts around one hour.

Working with people experiencing homelessness

Delivered by staff from the largest homeless charity in Wales, the Wallich, this recording introduces the context, challenges and skills for working with people experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. 

The video covers:

  • Types of homelessness 
  • Preventing homelessness 
  • An introduction to trauma and psychologically informed environments 
  • Challenges and skills

Working with refugees and asylum seekers

Delivered by Mandy Gould of NLS Solicitors, this recorded session provides an introduction to the context, challenges and skills for working with refugees and asylum seekers. 

The session will cover:

  • The realities and impact of the ‘hostile environment’
  • Considering trauma and boundaries when working with sanctuary seekers, including looking after your own wellbeing
  • Communication factors, including language barriers, working with interpreters and cultural differences

Working with clients with reduced mental capacity

This session, delivered by Joe Brophy of Qualia Law CIC, provides an introduction to the skills and knowledge needed when working with people with reduced mental capacity.

The topics covered include:

  • Tips for communicating with people with reduced mental capacity
  • Navigating consent and confidentiality
  • Basic safeguarding for this client group
  • Decision making and The Mental Capacity Act 2005
  • Dealing with third parties, common pitfalls, misunderstandings and a subjective approach
  • Taking instructions and key decisions: the process
  • Awareness and the future
