LawWorks Clinics Network roundtable November 2018 round-up

The November Clinics Network roundtable provided the opportunity for clinic coordinators in London and Birmingham to discuss the regulatory issues facing the pro bono sector in light of proposed changes to the SRA Handbook.

LawWorks held a Roundtable in London and Birmingham on 29th November 2018 discussing the regulatory issues facing the pro bono sector in light of proposed changes to the SRA Handbook. Presentations were given to by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and LawWorks.

James Sandbach (Director of Policy and External Affairs) and Richard Pitkethly (Head of Learning and Practice) spoke about issues and context for how the SRA’s rules and reforms effect pro bono practice, and about LawWorks policy work on regulatory issues.

From the SRA, Carol Westrop (Head of Legal Policy) and Chris Handford (Head of Regulatory policy), spoke about the SRA’s work on the handbook in respect of the non-commercial sector, including new guidance that will be forthcoming.

The SRA, following conversations with LawWorks, has recently produced a welcome statement about volunteering and pro bono work in clinics.
