Developed by the Office of Sarah Sackman, Labour MP for Finchley and Golders Green, the clinic was created in response to a clear and growing need within the community. Constituents regularly contact Sarah about legal issues, often without a clear route to resolution. The pop-up clinic model has been introduced as a way to begin addressing this gap, with plans to roll out further sessions across Finchley and Golders Green.
The first session, held in March, brought together volunteer lawyers from the local community to provide free, in-person advice across areas including housing and family law. By offering support in a familiar and accessible setting, the clinic aims to reach people earlier, before issues escalate.
As Sarah Sackman MP said:
“Access to justice should not be determined by how much money you have. I am proud to see our community turning out to help each other, using their skills and knowledge as a practical force for good.”
At its first session, residents were able to speak directly with volunteer lawyers, gaining a clearer understanding of their rights and next steps. For many, having the opportunity to talk through a problem and understand their options can be a crucial turning point.
One constituent who received free legal advice described the impact of the clinic:
“I’ve been experiencing ongoing issues in a criminal case and having someone listen and explain all my options made a real difference. I felt heard and supported and am now ready to take the next steps.”
A volunteer solicitor added:
“It was very rewarding to be able to give back to the community. Many people don’t realise their rights and the options available to them, and being able to help bridge that gap is exactly what initiatives like this are about.”
With limited access to free legal support across parts of Barnet, initiatives like this highlight the importance of locally delivered, community-led responses. By bringing together legal expertise and local knowledge, the clinic creates a space where people can access support early, feel heard, and begin to move forward with confidence.
LawWorks supported the development of the clinic from an early stage, working closely with those involved to help shape how the service could operate in practice. Through guidance on delivery models, partnerships and the practical considerations involved in setting up a clinic, LawWorks helps turn local ambition into sustainable services that can continue supporting communities over time.
This work reflects what pro bono can achieve at its best, professionals giving their time and expertise to support others, and communities coming together to respond to real need. With LawWorks supporting the growth of clinics like this across England and Wales, these efforts form part of a wider movement to strengthen access to justice, ensuring that more people are able to get the legal help they need, when they need it most.
With our support through the Clinics Network, LawWorks helps charities across England and Wales overcome legal barriers and strengthen their services for the long term.
