Pro bono opportunity with St James Legal Advice Centre

The St James Legal Advice Centre has clinics at Muswell Hill and Wood Green, North London, on a walk-in basis on Saturday and Tuesday mornings, and Wednesday afternoons. The Advice Centre offers free legal advice and support on all areas of civil law, other than immigration advice, including benefits, housing, employment, consumer, debt, and property.

What are you looking for volunteers to help with?

Legal advisers at our Saturday morning, Tuesday morning (Muswell Hill) and Wednesday afternoon (Wood Green) clinics to give at least preliminary advice across our practice areas (benefits, housing, employment, consumer, debt, and land). Advisers with specialist expertise are also welcome.

What will the time commitment be?

Each clinic is 2 hours. Sometimes there's some follow up work. There's potential to volunteer at a clinic every week, or less often (e.g. once a fortnight or once a month).

What will volunteers get out of this?

The opportunity to develop skills and experience in providing advice across a range of areas of law. The Wednesday clinic also offers the opportunity to mentor law students who provide administrative and triage support.  The friendly group of advisers support each other, with more senior advisers overseeing the work of more junior ones.

Person specification - what type of volunteers are you looking for?

Legal volunteers with 2 years plus PQE. Our mid-week (Tuesday and Wednesday) clinics are also ideal for retired solicitors/ solicitors on career breaks.
