Information for Schools on LawWorks
LawWorks is a national charity, providing access to free legal services (known as 'pro bono' work) for individuals and community groups.
In 2010 LawWorks supported the work of volunteer lawyers in providing legal advice to around 40,000 people and around 350 voluntary sector organisations.
A major aim of the charity is to facilitate the delivery of legal services (including mediation) to individuals and communities in need who are unable to access legal aid and cannot reasonably afford to pay for the advice.
LawWorks represents just under a hundred law firms and in-house legal departments, which, as members of LawWorks, provide lawyers and a portion of the funding for its various charitable projects. Its members include many of the major UK law firms and companies (a full ist is available here). In addition, LawWorks has a panel of over 170 volunteer mediators who are barristers, solicitors and other professionals working throughout the UK.
