Intervention Training. Join the Law Society’s International Action Team (IAT)

Tuesday 28th June 2011 16:00 to 18:00

Join the Law Society's International Action Team (IAT) of pro bono lawyers and law students by attending our intervention training. Read more here: http://international.lawsociety.org.uk/node/2988

You will be provided with an overview of international human rights law followed by training on how the Society drafts interventions and how to use the Society’s Intervention Manual. You will also be given an overview of the other types of human rights work carried out by the IAT.

 The Law Society writes interventions to governments and competent authorities:

• in support of lawyers whose human rights have been violated;

• opposing restrictions on the freedom and independence of the legal profession;

• challenging threats to the independence of the judiciary and the proper administration of justice; and

• opposing systemic or serious violations of the rule of law (such as Guantanamo Bay detentions and breaches of international legal standards in carrying out the death penalty).

When you have attended the training, you are eligible to assist in carrying out research and monitoring for violations (mostly students) or in drafting the intervention (usually a non-student) which when approved will be signed by the President of the Law Society on behalf of the profession. See here for previous interventions: http://international.lawsociety.org.uk/node/3806

In order to join the IAT, you will first have to attend our training. This takes place on 28 June 2011 – at the Law Society from 4pm to 6pm.  Please note that full payment must be received by 24 June 2011 in order to attend.

2.00 CPD hours available.
