Best Contribution by a Law School - 2010
Commended - The College of Law (now the University of Law)
“The College is devoted exclusively to promoting the advancement of legal education and the study of law. Through our extensive pro bono schemes…we are able to assist and educate members of the community as well as our students."
Since initiating its pro bono work the College has evolved to run projects on seven separate sites, each with at least one qualified practising solicitor to supervise the work and coordinate and develop services. In 2008/9 2,792 students across the College volunteered, 997 clients were assisted by way of legal advice and representation and the Streetlaw scheme presented 111 sessions.
Some services target specific client groups including asylum seekers at the Immigration Bail Unit, contact for children and separated families, leaseholders and deaf clients.
Other projects involve students working with partner agencies, including law centres, CABx, Liberty and also international organisations, including Peace Brigades International, Amicus and Reprieve.
